"It's really quite simple. We allow webmasters to buy and sell text links that will actually help the search engine algorithms identify what a website is about unlike clumps of unrelated links in the footer of a website, which is what you typically get with traditional paid links."
This quote from John Lessnau says a lot, and the article it is from is not too shabby either.
I believe Google, (GOOG) is walking on thin ice with this issue considering their vested interest.
They want us to report sites that sell links... they are crazy....

The whole paid links thing is a pain because all the top 10 results for competitive terms are filled with paid links. You play by the rules and you will lose.
Indeed! When our livelihood rests on the search rankings, bending the rules a bit is not that bad.
Especially if your bringing legit sites to the top of the rankings and not filling it with spam MFA sites.
And following the rules too closely usually makes us forget the reason the rule was made. Keep the search results accurate, which google (GOOG) has forgotten.
Thanks for your perspective Utah SEO, i forgot that i would be bankrupt if i didnt use paid links and other grey-hat techniques.
Lol at google, trying to control even more online. They blacklisted one of my sites because I bought links on TLA though, whatever.
I hope they dont do the same to me, cause I use TLA alot.
It's better to play by the rules.
Well after all of this, they should be placing less emphasis on link value
